Tasmanian designer Loz Abberton has been based in our southernmost state since 2006 where she has established a thriving business called “Who Did That” (www.whodidthat.com.au). Her focus has been on diminishing resources and her aim to “question the difference between necessity and redundancy when amassing stuff” as she explains on her website.
Loz utilises her graphic design and fashion background with a deep respect for the environment – she grew up living on a rural property in Queensland – which influences her choice of materials. Locally sourced veneers from accredited sources and sustainably-grown timbers are her preference although fans of Loz’s work will occasionally see products made from supernatural acrylics (until plant-based plastics are more widely available).
Recently, Loz was awarded the prestigious discovery prize ‘Prix des Découvertes’ at Maison et Objet, held in Paris in January this year. Her ‘Grandeliers’ are a range of designer lighting, 100 per cent designed and made in Tasmania from certified Tasmanian timbers. Because they are available in flat-pack form they are efficient to ship and easy to assemble – no tools required!
The French award for ‘most impressive new product’ was given to the entire range and Loz will now take her Grandeliers to New York for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in May 2013.
