Rouge sink from Schock

SCHOCK_WATERFALLD100_Rouge_AmbienteRed seems to be a colour which polarises the design community – it seems you either love it or loathe it. I, for one, am a fan of this rich, abundant hue which can add an often much-need splash of vibrancy to many an interior space.

The jury is still out about how much emphasis to place on the meaning of colours – and, indeed, differences in culture and background means you can’t always rely on interpretation. But, it’s generally accepted that red is an “action” colour which encompasses movement and vitality, passion and strength, and sometimes anger.

Particularly in kitchens, where we often aim for a neutral or white background as a way to ensure longevity, adding a splash of colour can bring life and energy to the room. Which is why I absolutely love this new Waterfall designer sink from granite sink manufacturer Schock. Available from 2014, this intense shade of red – Rouge – will be available.

Aside from the colour, the smooth contours of the sink bring to mind a the movement of water with the harmoniously curved lines acting as a counterpart to the in-your-face splash of red. The company interprets red as “a hue that symbolises optimism and joie de vivre, luck, energy and love” and says that, in kitchen design, red can have an “activating” effect.

The sink would be perfect against a monochromatic black and white background where it would draw the eye and inject and air of elegance. Alternatively, against neutrals or wood tones the red can elicit a feeling of ease and comfort. All sinks in the Waterfall range can be fitted with LED lighting on request -imagine the sink filled with ice and champagne bottles, backlit with LEDs. It could be the perfect party companion.

This is not the first time this company has introduced a coloured sink range. In 2012 it’s compact range was released in five vibrant Pop Art-inspired colourways: Sunflower, Bright Orange, Peppermint Green, Ocean Blue and Pink. The Waterfall range is the first of the larger models to enjoy such colour options.
