Ambiente preview – trends 2015

AmbienteEarlier this week I was lucky enough to attend a preview of the international design show Ambiente which will be held in Frankfurt, Germany from 13 to 17 February 2015. Run by the mega-organisation Messe Frankfurt, Ambiente is a major show in the calender for interior design and decorating products. The show features products from all over the globe in the varied segments of:

  • Dining (kitchen and table accessories, cultery, small electrical appliances, glass, porcelain ceramics and more)
  • Giving (gift items, stationery, jewellery, beauty and bath, gourmet gifts and more), and
  • Living (home environments, furniture, textiles, lights, home accessories, garden furniture and more).

In preparation for the 2015 Fair, Messe Frankfurt partnered with trend bureau Stilbüro bora.herke.palmisano to analyse the international trends across the consumer goods sector and predict the colours, materials and shapes leading the way in 2015 and beyond. In addition to the information provided now, the trend bureau team will be conducting specialist lectures daily during Ambiente.

Clarity + Lightness
Clarity + Lightness

Trend 1 – Clarity + Lightness

Clear, simple and with a hint of romance, this style exudes a sense of freedom and lightness. Light blue, lime green and gentle wood tones harmonise with unobtrusive nuances of white and grey. Fine materials and delicate designs are sensitively combined. A love of simple design goes hand in hand with the refined elegance of the materials and surface. Textiles are nostalgically interpreted to include pleats, tucks and lace to match up with fine wood grains and romantic blossoms and tendrils. To match this soft colour palette comes fragile glass.

Trend 2 – Craft + Culture

Carpet and textile art, ceramics, basket weaving, and artistic paintwork are the inspiration behind the imaginative design. Deliberate imperfections are seen in intense shades of camomile yellow, tourmaline, claret, indigo and rust-brown. Vivid blends and gradients of colour are further enhanced by powerful brushstroke designs. These are joined by expressive textiles as well as carpets with tufted textile surfaces. Porous, sandy ceramics, strongly grained woods and materials such as sisal, raffia, rattan and canvas emphasise an affinity with nature.

Trend 3 – History + Elegance

The world of fantasy and mysticism is celebrated in shades of dark mahogany, midnight blue and caviar black, with rosé, shimmering pearl and a glittering bronze providing theatrical colour accents. Materials with sensuous surfaces and a decorative patina provide a touch of opulence and glamour, artistically staged and combined with high-tech equipment. Along with cast iron or aluminium with the look of cast iron, the spotlight is on copper, bronze, brass and chrome, either in a high-gloss, matt or hammered finish. The luxury look is rounded off with
traditionally figured porcelain, soft leather, velvet and chenille.

Humour + Curiosity

Trend 4 – Humour + Curiosity

The playful, carefree spirit of childhood is the inspiration behind this optimistic design trend which greets everyday life with a smile. A bold farrago of colours such as mint, orange, rosé, nougat and graphite joins up with unusual materials and a straightforward variety of forms. The design credo is ‘humour’, with unorthodox solutions providing surprises of a very special kind. Moving multi-colour effects rub shoulders with
monochrome surfaces in matt or high-glass. Mirror foil and iridescent surfaces form a contrast with dull rubber, silicone, fleece, foam and
recycled plastic. As an expression of joie de vivre, motifs, lettering and graffiti receive a generous amount of space.
