Cristalplant Design Contest 2016

Ellen Bernhardt wins the Cristalplant Design Contest 2016 with “Sipàrio”, a project premiered at the Salone del Mobile in Milan last month.

Cristalplant Design Contest“Sipario” by Ellen Bernhardt is the winning project of the eighth edition of the Cristalplant® Design Contest, which this year has been promoted in collaboration with Elica, world leader in the design and manufacture of home cooker hoods. “Skyline” by Simone Bonanni and Attila Veress and “Sale&Pepe” by Francesco Meneghello and Davide Lanfranco were assigned the jury’s honourable mention.

The awards ceremony took place on Thursday, 14th April 2016 during the Milan Design Week, at the strategic location of Via Solferino 11, in the heart of the Brera Design District.

Ellen Bernhardt, a young German-born designer, stood out amongst the about 2,000 participants with a project that seized both the technical and technological peculiarities of Cristalplant Biobased and the style of Elica, a company with a well-defined culture and character.

Cristalplant Design Contest Ellen was born in 1982 and moved to Milan in 2001 to study with Piero Lissoni and Patricia Viel. After her studies, she worked with Carlo Colombo and later founded a design studio in partnership with Paola Vella in 2008, working for different clients in the furniture industry.

The concept of Sipario (“curtains” in Italian), a vertical cooker hood in moulded Cristalplant®, is inspired by the sinuous movement of the curtains of the traditional Italian theatre and gives it its distinguishing dynamic feature, in perfect harmony with Elica’s style and spirit. Just as a soft drape suddenly drops on the theatre stage to conceal the noise and lights of a change of scene, the Sipario project by Ellen Bernhardt ideally remains suspended on the wall to conceal the technological elements of the hood, enhance the most central part of the kitchen and softly illuminate the space.

The prototype of Sipario was premiered within the “Variations” installation by Elisa Ossino, in collaboration with File Under Pop, along with the collection of Cristalplant cooker hoods presented by Elica at Eurocucina FTK 2016.

Elisa Ossino, architect and interior stylist, designed the exclusive furniture project of the installation, featuring wallpaint tints, handmade terracotta tiles and hand-painted wallpapers manufactured by File Under Pop based on designs by Josephine Akvama Hoffmeyer and Elisa Ossino.
