Ernestomeda K-Lab – concept to completion

It’s always interesting to see how the original concept for a kitchen is designed then applied on a stand at a large show such as EuroCucina. The press kit we collected from Ernestomeda this year was really interesting in that it included both the designer’s original concept plans for the space, as well as how the design was eventually interpreted and displayed on the stand at the show.

This is the new Ernestomeda K-Lab kitchen, designed by Giuseppe Bavuso. With its informal, dynamic style, the company says it is conceptually intended for the younger market. Inspired by large workbenches found in industrial contexts, it includes the flexiblity to combine solid forms and open units to suit the needs of the homeowner. The key features of this new kitchen model include the framed door, used on the base units of the various compositions, with an inset handle.

Another characteristic of K-Lab is its use of modular open-fronted systems, which appear in various applications. The K-System open-fronted base unit can contain pull-out fittings – drawers and shelves – or fixed components such as a solid wood bottom shelf or a tubular steel footrest. Fixed or pull-out peninsulas can be connected to the structure.

The same system is used in the tall unit able to take built-in ovens – the wall unit and the ceiling K-SYSTEM with island hood, fitted with handy glass shelves. These items are also equipped with LED LINE lighting.

The frame of the new K-TABLE is made from the same elements as the K-System Open-Fronted Base Unit and can be personalised in the new metallix finishes or the new metal-look lacquered colours. The version on display at the show has a top in solid Deluxe vintage oak, but the table is available in all the Ernestomeda worktop materials.

The dual cooking/washing monobloc includes a hob with front controls. The sink is in the same material as the worktop, while different types of built-in installation are possible for the hob. Another K-Lab feature is the accessory rail, also available in combination with the shelf system, which can be fitted with racks for glasses, spices and knives. The layout is completed by the glass-fronted cabinets, in wall-mounted and floor-standing versions.
