TKBB: So what are the big trends you are seeing for bathroom design in 2017 and beyond?
AS: The biggest bathroom trends that I am seeing coming in for 2017 are a lot more masculine-style bathrooms with rich, luxurious, deep colours, and darker tiles which are very rich in terms of their finishes – think brass copper tapware and accessories.
We will also be seeing a continuation of modern/traditional themes. For example, we have completed quite a few Hamptons-style “modern traditional” bathrooms recently. Plus we are seeing lots of luxurious, very modern, “clean minimalist” bathrooms coming in on request.
We are seeing a huge increase in the use of massive mirrors, concealed lighting and lots of downlights. For lots of our clients, concealing everything to create really clean, sleek lines is a high priority but also plenty of storage so everything is tucked away. Under-panel lighting, niche lighting and inset lighting are all high on the request list.
TKBB: What about materials? Lots more marble, lots of concrete?
AS: Oversized tiles are also going to be huge – not just your average 600mm x 600mm, but even bigger sheet tiles such as 1500mm x 3000mm or similar. These create real luxury because they become almost seamless and look like big slabs of stone or marble. Tiles will be used to create a lot of texture and we are seeing a big focus on really large, high-impact textured tiles that are in that large format.
TKBB: What designers are you loving right now? Who is really pushing the bar?
AS: In terms of pushing the bar Minosa is absolutely pushing the boundaries in terms of design and finishes and what can be done in bathrooms. Their work is phenomenal and I absolutely love what they are putting out. James Treble is creating bathrooms that are more minimalistic and a push back towards modern which is great to see and really inspiring.
TKBB: What about brands? Who is doing great things?
AS: Gessi Tapware are doing some awesome tapware and really stunning work, finding the line between form and function, what can be done with tapware etc.
Roger Seller is another great one. The company is showcasing a range of innovations in features and fittings, what can be done with toilets, and what can be done with basins and cabinets.
TKBB: So what are your tips to staying on trend in 2017 for bathroom renovators and designers?
AS: Use great materials but don’t be too trend focused. Think luxury, think premium and think outside the square.
