However much you may love what you do, it’s common to experience bouts of boredom or a loss of purpose at stages throughout a long-term career. The Kitchen & Bathroom Designers Institute has put together a useful list of five ways to bust that boredom and regain your mojo, helping you retain your passion and find new focus in your career.
1. Up the ante
A new qualification or accreditation could take your career to the next level; could the title of KBDi Certified Kitchen or Bathroom Designer give you an edge over your competition? Or perhaps there are specific areas of study you’ve always wanted to undertake. Think about taking on a course in 2020 that will add to your skill set or help you diversify if you see a need.
2. Share your stories
If you’ve been in this industry for a while, chances are you have plenty of stories to tell. These might be inspirational, informative or simply entertaining – it doesn’t matter. The more we share our experiences with our clients and peers, the more we give back to our community. Sharing our own stories also encourages others to do the same, creating a learning experience for all.
3. Build a public profile
Maybe talking is more your style than writing, so look for opportunities to build a public profile by speaking at events for consumer groups or industry peers. You could offer to speak at a local business networking event, provide an expert opinion on an industry panel, offer advice through online videos, or share your story at a special occasion. KBDi is always looking for speakers for Home Shows and various industry events – let them know if this is on your radar.
4. Become a mentor
It’s easy to take for granted the extensive list of skills you have acquired throughout your career but someone new to the industry would love the chance to tap into that knowledge and experience. You could mentor a member of your own staff or take part in an organised mentoring programme (like the one delivered by KBDi).
5. Get involved
Another way to rekindle your spark is giving back to the industry – consider volunteering with an industry association in their chapter or state committee, or investigate what is involved with becoming a board member. Attend meetings and conferences and take advantage of the networking opportunities these provide. Join overseas design tours and travel with like-minded colleagues.
