Slow Stone is an art/furniture start-up born in London and made in Italy. Slow Stone revolves around the complexities of stone where tables, lamps and furniture arise from the interpretation of a methodically chosen slab of marble where the design is dictated from the reading of its veins and inclusions. The debut collection “Stories of Creation” by Samantha Oriegien Swaby is made from Grey Saint Laurent Marble and inspired by mythology and esoteric meaning.
Prometheus Table
The main protagonist of the collection, the table has an image of blindfolded man’s face which brings to mind the face of Prometheus. The head has been cut out of the Grey Saint Laurent Marble and the facial details have emphasised using a CNC machine to etch out the details. 24 carat gold leaf was inlaid to represent a blindfold over the eyes.
The gold was rubbed back to highlight the white veins of the marble, with the table top made of burned wood and polished brass to create the table base. The entire structure sits on transparent Lucite legs.
Wings of Cherubim
Samantha started from the natural shape glimpsed into the marble and created a reflection of it sculptured in clay. As the sculpture cracked dramatically while drying, Samantha thought she had struck disaster. A friend suggested filling the crack with gold, like Japanese Kintsugi (the art of precious scars). After taking a mould, casting in transparent resin and filling the cracks with gold, the marble was then embossed by the water jet CNC machine and a brass ring embraces the two wings with central brass pieces.
Nommos
A sculpture that can be used as a table or as a decorative element, Nommos has hexagonal plinths that surround that central structure and are created with materials that recall the five main elements present in nature – in this way earth, fire, water and ether correspond to wood, cut layered Lucite, brass and marble. Samantha worked with the acrylic specialist to create the illusion of solid blocks with the addition of optical glue sandwiched in between each layer to create the effect of clouds and water.
Slow Stone creations are unique, never to be repeated and have been infinite years in the making.
