The HIA National Kitchen & Bathroom Awards were held recently to celebrate the best of the best in Australian kitchen and bathroom design. For the first time in history, HIA announced the winners in a virtual presentation due to limitations on large events due to COVID-19. This year’s award winners were unveiled before thousands of industry leaders and interested consumers watching from home or their office.
2020 HIA Australian Bathroom Design
Winner: MyStyle Homes (QLD) and Kim Duffin Design
North Queensland
This sophisticated bathroom is a refreshingly light and inviting retreat for its homeowners. A freestanding bath and open shower are delightfully showcased aboard an L-shaped plinth lined by textured grey porcelain tiles.
A marble vanity and charming shaker style cabinetry contrasts against Queensland Walnut timber, while gold tapware and classic blue upholstery in the adjoining robe add a sense of vibrancy.
Judges were impressed with the well planned zones that create an open, easy flow which takes advantage of the exquisite view afforded by the location.
2020 HIA Australian Bathroom of the Year
Winner: Preferred Builders, Paul Tilse Architects and Braithwaite Innovative Joinery
ACT and Southern NSW
The inspiring balance between black, white and timber finishes in this bathroom make the space as welcoming as it is stylish. Judges were impressed by its sleek Manhattan-style, commenting on the sublime quality of workmanship and the aesthetics that made the design pop.
The finished walls in understated marble-look panels and all-white mosaic tiling contrast with the galvanised black steel framing of both the doors and the mirror. Along with the matching matte black tapware, this gives the ensuite a durable appearance, without overbearing the space.

Winner: MyStyle Homes (QLD) and Kim Duffin Design
North Queensland
A wide open kitchen set beneath a large void is a refined solution for this home’s tropical location. Circulation and air flow were guaranteed by the high ceiling and by propping the marble island bench on legs, rather than keeping it flush to the floor.
Judges commented on the contextual balance throughout, from the layout of the cabinetry to the way the suspended light fixture above the island mirrors the joinery below. A walk-through butler’s pantry with sliding splashback servery, built-in storage, extensive workspaces and amenity ensures this incredible kitchen is equally liveable and practical.
2020 HIA Australian Kitchen of the Year
Winner: JAG Kitchens
South Australia
Described as ‘a pleasure to work in’ and, impressively, ‘the greatest kitchen I’ve seen in a decade’ by one judge, it’s safe to say this kitchen has the wow factor.
An intrinsically welcoming space, with a harmonious blend of warm timber and calming dark hues, the design boasts a discreet bar area and integrated appliances.
Encompassed by a golden sandstone wall on one side and exposed black bricks on the other, this functional space has been crafted to perfection and is one that people will want to be in, work in, and entertain in.
