Totem bookcase

Designed by Bjarke Ingels, founder of BIG, and Fabio Novembre, artistic director of Driade, this is the stunning Totem bookcase.

Driade is known for eclecticism and innovation, particularly for its many collaborations with internationally-renowned architects and artists. In this latest product, Driade and BIG have taken inspiration from the design approach of buildings and used it to create the Totem bookcase.

Driade-TotemA self-supporting structure, Totem has a revolving system that allows for convenient access on all four sides of the display unit. It consists of either horizontal solid oak shelves of various sizes, stacked one on top of the other, and supported by X shaped spacers that help create the complete structure. Each shelf is then divided into four parts to create small frames that are perfect for storing a variety of objects.

Driade-TotemThe bookcase is described as a “magical, open place to collect one’s obsessions and daily habits” and it certainly has a whimsical nature that would suit many Australian homes.

BIG is a group of architects, designers, urbanists, landscape professionals, interior and product designers, researchers and inventors with offices in Copenhagen, new York and London. BIG’s architecture emerges out of a careful analysis of how contemporary life constantly evolves and of global economic flows and communication technologies that require new approaches to architectural and urban organisation.
