STARON® DESIGN AWARD WINNERS 2015
Staron Design Award Judges Panel: Stephen Varady, Stephen Varady Associates; Amanda Stanaway, Woods Bagot; Nicky Lobo, Habitus
Residential Category Winner: Kim Duffin, Sublime Architectural Interiors
Surrounded by a subtropical ancient rainforest, this intriguing home was designed to blend with the landscape. The kitchen needed to reflect the style and mood of what was created externally, while capturing the view of the bush and valley below.
One of the kitchen’s key features is the use of Samsung Staron® Solid Surfaces. This durable product has been used vertically and horizontally on the island benchtops, cabinet doors, drawer fronts and the outdoor bar table. Colour Sanded Dover has been used for the island benchtop with a flowing drop down edge and also for the outdoor bar table. Staron® in Sleek Silver was chosen for all vertical surfaces to meet the clients’ brief of an achromatic colour palette.
Acrylic Couture® — a metal material interlaced and woven, then embedded in acrylic — has been clad to the island front. The effect created by this unique material brings a whole new meaning to three-dimensional. LED strip lights were used on the edge of the island as mood lighting, illuminating the Acrylic Couture® paneling and creating the illusion that the material inside is dancing.
The rosewood sliding doors complement the other natural elements in this space, providing warmth and an even greater connection to nature. The adjacent Staron® benchtop was designed and manufactured to finish at the same height as the external table.

The concept of geometry was woven throughout the space aesthetically, in form, finish and functionality. This takes center stage in the reception area, where the curved Staron® counter in colour Bright White is ‘imprinted’ with flush mounted tessellating marble mosaic tiles. This reflects the core concepts of flexibility and ‘working together’.
The counter itself works as a landing point for visitors to the space whilst also offering administration staff a comfortable and pleasing environment in which to conduct their daily duties. With a smooth finish and no open joins, Staron® fits the performance requirements of a busy reception counter and concierge point. It also creates a beautiful and welcoming appeal.

Concept Category Winner: Kianoosh Kavoosi, student of Central Institute of Technology Perth
In her concept, Kianoosh designed a clock frame that can be made entirely with Staron®. Designed in 6mm Staron® in colour Bright White, the illuminating nature of the material has been taken advantage of by creating a design that can be backlit with LED lighting.
The concept clock frame could glamorously light up in the night. With striking red clock hands to contrast the crisp white Staron® and a timber frame to complement the Staron® – this design serves the purpose of telling time, while creating an art like presence.
