Alessandro Mendini has created two new paintings for Azzurra Art that have been applied to Azzurra’s Nativo model sink, designed by Giovanni Levanti. The aesthetics of the sink together with the Mendini designs elevates the product to a true work of art.
The two new works are called Atmosfera and Stilema. I could try and paraphrase but it’s really better to let the artist speak in his own words to describe his creative process:
“When I started working with Azzurra, the idea was to create hand-painted decorations on articles already designed by other offers through the application of the aptitude for re-design that lies in the tradition of my work. We chose a small sink with perfect forms designed by my friend Giovanni Levanti, who was willing to take part in the game.
This led to the study of two versions of ornamentation, one speckled, the other geometric. The former was named ATMOSFERA and superimposes on certain strategic parts of the body of the sink a set of tiny dots, either in polychrome or just blue, as if they were constellations. That’s why ATMOSFERA comes in polychrome and blue versions. The latter goes by the name of STILEMA, where a system of geometrical polychrome marks typical of my style is placed at the center of the fixture as if it were a diadem or necklace. STILEMA comes only in a polychrome version. That’s the story behind these three Azzurra sinks masterfully decorated by hand with just one firing at extremely high temperature.” (Alessandro Mendini – March 2016)
What I love about these designs is they springboard from an item we find in every bathroom in every country – a sink. It’s a fixture we often don’t consider too deeply but why shouldn’t this functional product be given a designer edge?
Azzurra Art springs from the desire to grant objects of daily use – such as a bathroom fixture or a sink – absolute and personal value through artistic representation. Art is more than just making some simply attractive object. Azzurra Art aims to be the highest reassessment of the concept of decor using graphics that are unprecedented in the world of sanitary ceramics.
Personally, these three sinks were one of the most eye-catching elements of Salone Bagno this year and I love them.
