Waldorf Astoria style hits Berlin

New York’s iconic hotel, the Waldorf Astoria, has unveiled its European flagship in Berlin following three-and-a-half years of construction. Housed in the “Zoofenster” skyscraper, the international luxury hotel chain takes up most its 31 floors with the remainder of the space allocated to offices and retail shops.

The building was designed by architect Christoph Mäckler who is renown for his “Lindencorso” (Unter den Linden) in Berlin and the new “Opernturm” in Frankfurt.

Axor, by Hansgrohe, was the brand chosen to partner with the designers for the bathing spaces including 182 deluxe and superior rooms and 50 suites. Homage is paid to the Art Deco era thanks to the Axor Citterio collection and the striking visual effect of the two-coloured marble in the bathrooms. The collection, which is the result of a collaboration between Axor, and the Milanese architect and designer Antonio Citterio, made its debut more than 10 years ago but its quality of design and manufacture make it an obvious choice for this most exclusive of spaces.

It’s not unusual for European designers to create collections which are still classics more than a decade after they were first launched and it seems that fantastic quality and an enduring design has won out over some of the newer, more flashy options which must have been available to the specifiers. What I love about these products is the simplicity of the design – Antonio Citterio has created pieces with spectacular form but that also function perfectly. It’s no wonder they were chosen.
