The Back Pocket Kitchen – sort of!

Sometimes, you come across a design that just catch your imagination – and this is one of them!

photo (12)Beckin is a group of recently graduated American designers who create unique home and outdoor products. The N2 Kitchen System is a portable kitchen that is designed to adapt to a variety of environments. The kitchen contains three primary elements, the sink/table area, the stove and the storage system. The entire system fits into a portable storage container.  It explores indoor and outdoor functionality through its modular and adaptable design, becoming useful in, home or in the bush.

The sink and table area contains a number of functions while allowing the entire surface to blend seamlessly. The space includes a sink, cutting board, table area and storage space. The sink is large and highly usable with a tap that hides when not in use. The cutting board contains a display surface using e-ink technology to divide the surface for proportioning food. The cutting board slides to reveal cutlery and similar food preparation supplies.

The stove uses a unique method of control to eliminate burdensome knobs and dials that can easily break outdoors. Instead, the cooking pot or pan is used as the controller, rotating on the burners along a track system. Aligning the handles with different burners changes the temperature. The track system optimizes temperature efficiency while providing a stable surface when the environment becomes a factor. When not in use the stove burners lower to provide a seamless surface making it easy to clean. Finally a table surface slides over the stove making it seamless and providing a preparation or eating surface.

This is a clever piece of design, not only maximising space in a smart yet practical manner, but integrating some intelligent new ideas into a “pocket kitchen”. If you have created some smart ideas when restricted by space, send us a photo, we’d love to follow this up with some local equivalents!
