As some of you may know, I do enjoy a wine every now and again! But what price storage? This guy reckons he has the answer.
Sometimes called a gourmet, passionate and very creative, Nicolas Francart decided in the early 90s to rethink and change the way wine is kept and exposed. He designed his first wine cellar and set up the company Degré 12 in 1995. In his opinion it is much more than a simple storage area, Degré 12 turned the wine cellar into a living and welcoming place where design, luxury and refinement coexist in harmony.
Degré 12 takes the wine cellar out of the shadows and turns bottles into works of art that people watch get older rather than drink (lucky for some!).
The design is only the visible part of the iceberg. Indeed, the challenge is technological. All technical controls for temperature, humidity & lights regulation must be invisibly and silently integrated to fit into living rooms. This can only be achieved via custom designs and manufacturing of most components. The artisans working for Degré 12 have become masters in customising and personalizing each realisation.
Each year, there are only about a dozen cellars that make it out of the workshops, but this is apparently the price to pay for ensuring top end quality wine cellars. Today, Degré 12 installs wine cellars in Brussels, Luxembourg, Courchevel, Geneva, London, New York and Las Vegas – however I’m sure if the right call was made………
