AIDT 2017 – SCM Group Day 2

Day two brought gorgeous sunshine and gloriously mild weather as we jumped back in the cars for a journey of around an hour and a half to visit another of SCM Group’s customers, Giessegi.

Giessegi is a manufacturer of bedroom furniture and is one of Italy’s largest producers. Its products are distributed throughout Europe to high-end furniture retail outlets and the company has recently launched a number of its own retail stores in a few countries.

Giessegi is one of SCM Group’s largest customers and it’s easy to see why. Its factory and production facilities are extensive with rows upon rows of SCM Group machinery in operation. One factory manufactures all the components needed to create the range of products and supplies the components to other areas of the complex who assemble, pack and distribute the finished product. Giessegi supplies both flat-pack, kit products to suit one market as well as fully-assembled, high-end products for another market.

Walking through the factory areas, it was easy to see how well organised and planned this facility is – even on such a grand scale. And the scale was certainly grand! We walked the length of a full production run then went to another floor and saw the exact production run repeated exactly. In this way the company manages it stock and demand.

We were incredibly lucky to be joined on our tour by the owner of Giessegi and he suggested we join him at lunch at one of his favourite restaurants. The opportunity to eat with a local, where they like to eat, is one we never turn down so we drove a short distance to a gorgeous farmhouse where we gorged ourselves on local cold meats and cheeses, the most incredible hand-made pastas and barbequed meats.

With full bellies we were back in the cars for a short drive to another client of SCM Group but a completely different facility. This factory – the company name is CP – produces customised furniture for much smaller production runs and therefore the factory was set up quite differently to Giessegi. It was much smaller, for a start, but the SCM Group machinery on display was much more specialised and customised to suit the different type of production.

A short drive up the road was another factory and client of SCM Group which produces smaller components for other companies – so, no finished pieces here, just parts. Again, more customised machines were on display to suit the focus on special orders and customised items.

With our heads spinning with information, we started the 2 hour drive back to our hotel.
