Here are the major award winners from the 2023 ACFA Industry Awards, held at Sydney’s Darling Harbour on Friday 15th September.
Cabinet Maker of the Year
Sponsored by AWISA
Winner: Northern Kitchens & Joinery in conjunction with Meredith Clark Design
The judges said: “We love the eclectic use of materials that is unified by beautiful detailing”.
This kitchen is soothing and sophisticated. The use of soft greens and American Walnut veneer is a colour trend that is bold yet will stand the test of time. When teamed with a timber veneer the kitchen becomes reminiscent of nature, creating an organic feel that breathes life into the space.
The kitchen boasts luxurious 60mm island benchtop in Monet marble with a 40mm mitred edge surround to the tall cabinets and splashback.
The space elegantly masks select integrated appliances behind painted cabinetry for a seamless, yet functional, look. Soft radii to the rangehood box and island end panels, plus a round table leg, give visual appeal to the seating area.
Design of the Year
Sponsored by Finlease
Winner: Pedulla Studio
The judges said: “A true furniture craftsman! This functional art piece epitomises and celebrates nature!”
Made from solid American Ash, the main seat structure uses a technique called stacked lamination to build up a solid foundation which is then carved back to its final shape.
The curved ‘vine,’ also made from solid ash, re-sawn from the same boards to ensure grain colour and continuity, has been cut into thin strips, then formed into its final shape. The curved vine on the left also acts as the supporting leg, providing a sturdy, usable bench seat that doubles as a sculpture.
Vigne is French for “vine”, the name referring to the fluidity of the solid Ash curves which wrap themselves around the carved seating structure in the same way a vine grows around its trellis.
We’ll have more awards categories to come in the following days so stay tuned!
